Governor Urges Nation's Governors To Make Coal, Steel Priorities In Development of New Energy Policy
Contact: Lara Ramsburg, 304-558-2000
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Gov. Joe Manchin today urged the nation’s governors to consider coal and steel as cornerstones in the development of future energy policy.
Speaking before the NGA’s Natural Resources Committee during the organization’s annual winter meeting in Washington, Gov. Manchin urged his colleagues to look beyond foreign sources of energy in the development of a national energy policy that will keep the nation growing, safely and securely.
“If the United States is to become independent of foreign sources of energy, the coal industry must have greater regulatory and market stability to maintain the investment needed and end the boom and bust cycles,” the governor said. “As we develop a comprehensive national energy and electricity policy, it must include coal both as a natural resource and as a cornerstone of national security.”
During this afternoon’s meeting, the governor also asked that the NGA Economic Development and Commerce Committee consider steel as a commodity vital to a healthy domestic economy and national defense as it develops recommendations for Comprehensive National Energy and Electricity Policy.
“If our country is to remain strong it must have reliable domestic sources of energy and the ability to manufacture steel,” the governor added. “I believe that this country will have a national energy policy, and I believe that the governors of this country will be the ones tasked to push forward with its development.”
