March 12, 2010 Governor Declares State of Emergency for 34 Counties Due to Potential Flooding CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Gov. Joe Manchin today declared a State of Emergency for 34 counties due to anticipated flooding caused by rainfall and snowmelt.
March 12, 2010 Governor encourages residents to be vigilant about potential flooding
Gov. Joe Manchin today authorized the West Virginia National Guard as a precaution to potential flooding. Guard members will be stationed in areas where flooding may occur, in the Potomac Basin and along the Ohio River. The governor is reminding residents to be vigilant because, as the temperature warms, snow melts and rain comes, there is a potential for flooding. The West Virginia Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is working closely with the National Weather Service and the West Virginia National Guard to monitor the current weather.

Joe Manchin has joined a bipartisan group of governors in asking Congress to stop a plan giving the Environmental Protection Agency the authority to regulate greenhouse gases, a move that would potentially harm the competitiveness of the nation’s economy.
